We Define Strobing

Everyone knows contouring, but there is a new game changer that has been establishing in the industry for a couple of seasons now. Makeup artists have been using this light-reflecting technique on models for years; applying shimmery products to high points of the face to catch the photographer’s flash but now this technique is being taken out of the studio.

“Its origins are from runways around the globe,” says Stewart. “This trend is about healthy-looking skin rather than the sculpting you get with contouring. When you highlight first, the contours in the face naturally come forward.”

Where the dramatic technique of contouring uses matte finish, dark and light products to ‘push in’ and ‘pull out’ the structures of your face sculpting bone structure, ‘strobing’ is about strategically highlighting the high points of your face in one pearly product, that’s a shade lighter than your skin tone. The result is a natural glow that looks like it’s coming from within.

“Strobing is highlighting for the HD age. It’s the yin to the yang of contouring. Strobing uses light-reflective products on all the high points of the face to create skin that looks light, bright and radiant,” says senior artist Rebecca Butterworth. “It’s easier and more flattering than contouring.” Topshop’s beauty consultant, Hannah Murray, agrees: “I’m definitely an advocate of using a light touch to shape the face,” she says. “Choosing light-reflective highlighter really helps to make cheekbones pop.”
With no face-mapping required or extensive time to make sure the harsh lines are blended to the dot, you just ‘strobe’ the spots the light is most likely to hit – think: above the cheekbones, the bridge of the nose, the high of the forehead and the tip of the cupid’s bow. Once you’re all blended in your face will be beaming with light.
