Crossover cars are one of the great trends of the twenty-first century when it comes to the automobile industry. Sales of the more traditional body styles, such as hatchbacks and saloons, are slowing down around the world, and in developing markets – including China – sales of crossover vehicles are booming, with a 50% growth recorded for last year. This is great news for the car business. Crossovers and SUVs are particularly lucrative, because most of the designs are based on already established hatchbacks and sedans, and these bear the majority of the costs of the development. In the eyes of the manufacturers, making a crossover is an easy way to boost profits: they’re fashionable, in high demand, and all you need to do to make one is to take a suitable existing model, stick a low-slung bumper on it, a big spoiler and bigger wheels, and jack the whole body up by half a foot. Easy!
Of course, when it comes to the luxury market, crossovers and SUVs are taken a little more seriously by the designers. The aim is not just to make a larger scale version of an existing model, but a unique car in its own right, designed for families or those who require something a little beefier for the roads. There have been a huge number of recent examples of high-end crossover cars in the luxury market over the past couple of years, including models released by Bentley and Lamborghini, and with planned releases in 2017 by Rolls Royce and Aston Martin. Ferrari – the purists of the luxury car world – apparently have sworn a solemn oath not to get involved, but time will tell as this style of car gains velocity.
Jaguar F-Pace: A Truly Great Crossover
Jaguar – the wonderful British car company responsible for some of the most iconic car designs of the 20th century – are a little late on the crossover scene. However, their F-Pace has shown they’re taking the challenge of creating a crossover car which maintains the Jaguar principles of pristine design and performance seriously.
It’s so far been a massive success; the F-Pace has proven to be their fastest selling car ever, and is accounting for half their entire production at present. The reason for this seems to be due to a shift in the company’s demographics – the F-Pace is a luxury SUV which is aimed at both men AND women looking for a luxury vehicle which suits all needs. Of course, credit must be given where it is due, and the vehicle’s massive success is also down to the excellence of its design. The F-Pace crossover features a fastback-style body shape, the largest wheels ever put on a Jaguar, a V6 supercharged engine, and an overall look which puts it right at the top of the list of good-looking SUVs – a car style not known for winning many beauty contests.
So, bringing a new dawn for Jaguar, and a return to form for this innovative, luxurious, exclusive car manufacturer, the F-Pace is undoubtedly a vehicle to look out for.
