The American street style photographer Ari Seth Cohen visited Sydney to talk his latest book and local sartorial stars. Cohen started his blog “Advanced Style” in 2008 as an honour to his late grandmother, and yet, soon after it turned into an international marvel creating a new view into ageing and showing its followers that style doesn’t go away with age.

“[I] Wanted to really share a perspective on ageing that I thought was lacking. I didn’t see anything positive or inspiring in terms of the depiction of ageing globally.” said Cohen in an interview with Vogue. The 36-year-old San Diego born photographer started his blog in New York and is now based in Los Angeles where he is working on a documentary about long-term love stories, depicting those lucky few that hit their 60 year anniversary happily in love and keep on counting.

This is the second time Cohen visits Australia. “There’s great lifestyle here. I don’t see as much plastic surgery. There’s not this obsession with youth that I’ve seen in other cities,” he says of Sydney where he was in the company of 61-year-old Newtown-based jewellery designer Sarah Jane Adams, and Lesley Crawford, the longtime SBS stylist.

“It’s not the first place you think of for advanced style,” Cohen, says of Australia. “But I’ve always had really good luck here. Walking around Sydney I can photograph way more people than I can in a lot of cities.”

The fighter of ageism and talented curator of living subjects presents his book as an “international glimpse” with subjects from Rome, Palm Springs and Tokyo and also includes essays that focus on ageing why it’s something to be revered and honoured, not feared or stopped. The influencer explained how he focuses on the personality and story behind each person and not just on their fashion choice.
