Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2016 is the place that gathered together fashion models, designers, retailers and shoppers to discover new trends for the new spring/ summer season. The one of a kind event hosted unique fashion parades and shows, workshops and exhibitions, with a twist of magic and science.
Aside from bringing together people from all over Australia to discover the fashion trends up close, and before the rest of the world, the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2016 has also hosted the debut of a fashion collection that is both innovative and for the first time to be presented in Australia: The JASONGRECH Cognitive Couture.
The first ever couture collection created using cognitive technologies was presented at Melbourne Spring Fashion Week 2016. The collection was a joined effort of iconic fashion designer JASONGRECH and IBM Watson cognitive technology.
Traditionally, couture fashion designers start drawing the collection at least a year before they are ready to present it to the public. But the pressure coming from fast-fashion retailers determined a dramatic shrinkage of the period over the last years. Hence the high-end fashion designers capabilities to understand consumers’ trends have become more and more crucial for the success of their collections.
In designing the JASONGRECH Cognitive Couture, Jason Grech benefited from IBM Watson Visual Recognition technologies and other cognitive research tools that allowed him access to insights into fashion trends and fashion design possibilities. A decade of runaway fashion show images were analysed together with the current day social media buzz. One result of this analysis is the IBM cognitive technologies can actually help predict colour trends. The Australian designer mentioned that he used the colour palette suggested by the cognitive system, hence introducing pastels to his work for the first time, completely uncharacteristic to of previous style.
Have you ever thought that one can turn software coding into a work of art, into fashion and fabric? This has been done for the first time earlier this year. A Marchesa creation, a first-of-a-kind cognitive dress was created for the Met Gala event.
IMB aims to use Watson technologies to help people do things better. Did they achieve their goal with the JASONGRECH Cognitive Couture? The pictures with the collection speak for themselves.
